    The classic Amsterdam image of stately canals, the Canal Loop is principally the Herengracht and Keizersgracht, lined with gracious tall 17th and 18th-century houses. Some of these are now museums, most notably the eccentric Kattenkabinet.     This would once have been a very grand and opulent building so it is sad to see it has been allowed to deteriorate. I booked this hotel on one of the mystery hotel deals for a 4 star hotel and was a little disappointed. I would not describe it as 4 star. The staff were excellent , attentive. I was offered an upgraded room on check in and thought , ok […] let's treat myself. Comfortable but shabby. Wallpaper peeling, scuffs, unattractive and old fashioned. Breakfast buffet, excellent if a little expensive. Overall a pleasant stay but the hotel could be so much better.     Location is very good. Close to major shopping street. Rooms are a bit spartan but extremely clean. Don't bother eating breakfast in the hotel - instead head next door to the very cool airy 2 level Cafe de Jarden. In summer, they open the patio right on the canal. Also the cafe attached to the hotel lobby is not too bad either for quick latte.

    Booked a superior room which was then upgraded to what was called a junior suite. Nothing like a suite, just a larger room. Dread to think how small the regular rooms must be! Was worth the fabulous view though...beautiful. The hotel has original period features in reception and fantastic stairwell...however looks as if the rooms were last upgraded […] in the sixties and forgotten since then...peeling paint....grubby decor...creeking floors.     Hotel in a lovely location overlooking river Amstel. The hotel looks a little jaded and could do with a refurbishment. That said they were replacing carpets on the stairs ,so maybe it is the start of some improvements. Nice central position with plenty of bars and cafe's in the location. Easy to walk to any of the major attractions in 15-20 mins.

Yes a bit faded, but clean, comfortable and in an excellent position - at the edge of the city centre but easily within walking distance of the museums and markets. I read the comments before I went and felt a bit concerned however these were unfounded.     For a 4-star hotel in the middle of Amsterdam, the amenities and the upkeep are not that great. My room - for which I had to pay an extra 30 Euros a night - had torn and dirty wallpaper, and an old style TV that was missing the remote. There is free Wifi only in the lobby area. To have Wifi in the room you have to pay extra. You have to ask for a robe. […] There are additional charges for ordering room service - which I think it's crazy. So if you order a 3 Euro Diet Coke you will have to pay an extra 4 Euros for the Room Service charge.     The hotel is outwardly elegant and in a great location. Having not stayed there before, but knowing the city, it looked a great place to stay. But this is where my praise has to end. The hotel is marketed as a 4 star hotel and certainly priced as one, but nothing about the hotel is deserving of 4 stars or such a high room rate. The lobby is fine and […] the staff polite. The one lift works on and off, so I took to the stairs which had thread bare carpet. The room was very small and cramped with barely room to walk around the bed...which was very uncomfortable. The safe had a broken lock, hot drink facilities were limited with no milk available and the TV was at least 25 years old, which is probably when the room was last refitted and decorated. Venturing out of the room we found there was no hotel bar, which basically meant go out or sit in your tiny room. Whilst searching for the elusive bar it was clear that the rest of the hotel was in a state of disrepair. Chipped paint, tired decoration and dead light bulbs.     On the positive side, the hotel is in an excellent location and the room was clean and tidy. However the room was very small and badly in need of updating. The toilet and sink both had cracks in them and the decor looked like it was from the 1980's. In our opinion this is definitely not the standard you would expect from a 4 star hotel.

    Found the hotel no problem. Very good location for all local sights. Was disappointed with the room decor and size. Room wad not ready on arrival so was given an alternative as we just wanted to dump our bags and go out. The roim eas very old fashioned and although we had asked for a twin it was only a double.     excellent location, friendly and helpful staff, hotel room generally good perhaps a little tired but no major complaints, i would be happy to recommend this hotel to other travellers
