Be aware that the rooms facing the city have no balcony. We upgraded on check-in and had a lovely balcony looking over the pools and sea. The hotel wasn’t full so there were plenty of sunbeds and breakfast was quiet even at peak hour! Plenty of food choices and the staff were friendly. There is no beach access due to erosion but the grounds are fine and pools looked lovely. Plenty of places to eat and drink just outside the hotel so make sure you explore. Grabs are plentiful and it’s only a 10 min drive to the butterfly farm and Batik cultural factory.

If you have kids, this is where it’s at! There is a kids club 10-13.00 (chargeable at 30 MYR for 2 hours) and 14.00-18.00 (free), both of which have great activities - in the morning, there is a large soft play zone with giant slides, video games etc and in the afternoon, they do activities like cooking class, golf, flying kites, etc. Plus you have all the pools, splash area and beach water sports. The staff were warm, professional and keeping with the strong Shangri-La brand ! We would come back!

Lovely hotel, great staff, definitely worth getting a room with a view of the pool/sea. Close to hawker market for food options. Need to take bus to go into George Town however, but bus stop is right outside the hotel so pretty convenient.

Reasonable but tired.

The Golden Sands is getting very tired. I have stayed there before many years ago and there had been little done to the property. The grounds are lovely but the beach has suffered greatly with much of the foreshore being washed away compared to25-20 years ago. Given the cost I was hoping for more.
