Cold, damp room with very small single bed.
When I arrived at 8pm reception was not manned. Only looking around I saw a note to say that I had to go to a different hotel to get key. If I was not local I would not have known were this other hotel was. I also called the number listed but know one picked up. Room was really dreadful, small, damp smelling and cold, the heating had not been switched on. I also had been given a small single bed, and room looked nothing like pictures. Soap dispenser in shower was empty. To be honest room was awful and the only reason I did not complain straight away was the fact that it was raining outside and I was incredibly tired after travelling all day. I informed reception that next morning at 6.30 am that I was dissatisfied, and that room was not worth the money and that I felt ripped off. This room was not worth the money and was an embarrassment to Hotel. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone.

It’s gonna be great…
This space was recently purchased by the Kirkwall Hotel property next door. It is going to be an amazing space once the transition is complete. The staff that helped us were kind and professional and our room was very comfortable. It was an experience we won’t soon forget. 😉

The hotel itself is good but the staff need to be a little more attentive to the guests. Just the little things like offering you another drink when your glass is clearly empty rather than having to ask. Some spend to much time chatting with each other rather than watching the needs of the room.

No in-house restaurant or bar
When we booked the hotel we were under the impression that there was a bar and a restaurant in house. However on arrival there was a note on the outside door of the hotel indicating that guests were to check in at the hotel down the road. We then discovered that breakfast was to be served in this hotel. This was a wee bit of an inconvenience especially as on 2 mornings it was raining. The breakfast was lovely and the restaurant staff were lovely too. Due to covid our rooms were not cleaned and we were left a note on which to tick any items we required (tea, coffee, milk, clean towels etc). We were to leave our dirty towels outside our door when we wanted them changed, whereupon clean towels would be left on the floor outside our room. Could we suggest that the clean towels are inside a bag, as leaving them in a much use corridor with lots of footfall "unpretected" does not seem very hygenic. The towels however were lovely and white and of good quality. There were a couple of issues with our room, however these were resolved quickly.

The hotel had gone into liquidation and had been taken over by the Kirkwall Hotel. We were not informed about this before we travelled. When we arrived at the hotel the entrance door was closed and a note told you to check in at the Kirkwall hotel. When we got the key and entered the Shore Hotel the reception was in darkness and the door of what had been the breakfast room had black polythene covering the inside of the door. This hotel is not worth £145 a night and I could not recommend it.

Disgraceful experience with the room and G.M
The room I was given at the Shore was really not fit for purpose- the noise from other rooms and bathrooms around meant the noise in my room was incredibly loud-‘with workers staying and getting up from 3.30 am. It was horrible and I did not really sleep more than 3 hours. I spoke to reception and the General Manager was called - I found her to be dismissive and incredibly rude - she coldly told me they were aware of the problems and asked the receptionist to refund me £15. She had no interest to engage with me- or show any concern or contrition for my experience. She barely acknowledged my presence and spoke as if I was not in front of her to her colleague. Having spent 25 years as an Executive in the hotel industry- I believe this GM demonstrated poor hospitality behaviours and it seemed to me the two staff members looked embarrassed. It was very disappointing and I believe she let herself down and the entire Kirkwall hotel down ( The Kirkwall Hotel now manages The Shore as an annexe).
