Brilliant break away. Lovely place with great facilities

2nd visit in 12 months,there will be many more.Residence ticks all the boxes for high standards,staff,location etc.

Such a beautiful setting with well manicured extensive gardens. Everything was spotless. What’s not to like with several pools, bars and restaurants to hand. Free transport into the old town, but if R&R rather than exploring is your thing, you wouldn’t need to leave the hotel complex. There is a green ethos of recycling which is good, too.

Superb hotel, well run and maintained; the gardens are wonderful.

This hotel was amazing! The hotel property is immaculate, with great views and very close access to the water. Staff was very professional. Breakfast was wonderful. I can't wait to stay here again. Highly recommend!

My wife and I normally stay in smaller holiday locations, so a large hotel was something fairly new to us. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will probably go back for a longer stay. Constructive feedback: We were slightly surprised that some of the views in the advertising photo's were really of adjoining hotels. Some facilities seemed to be fenced off as private. We had a room with a sea view. Although you could see the sea and get the sun in the afternoon from the balcony, it also overlooked a road which busy and quite noisy. Particularly noisy in the early morning and late evenings with motorbikes revving up outside - we though hotel staff arriving and departing for shifts? We ate one night in the hotel Mediterranean restaurant and the staff seemed uninterested. We ordered tap water to go with the meal and rather than leave the glass decanter, the waited filled our glasses. This meant every time we wanted water we had to attract his attention - not an easy task. Staff in the other restaurants were all very pleasant and attentive whenever we ate there. But we would rather emphasise the positive. The hotel was a very pleasant place to stay. The room was very spacious and comfortable with great service staff, who could not have done more for us. Reception were also very helpful often going out of their way. The pool facilities and gym were exceptional and worth staying here for these alone. Next time we'll ask for a garden view room, (which also look out over the sea).

Facilities are comprehensive, staff all very friendly and efficient, rooms clean, spacious and airy

Sadly the weather was very wet and windy - so good we stayed in a comfortable hotel with good facilities and staff

The hotel is extremely comfortable and the service is excellent. The hotel is suitated next to the sea and although a short distance from the centre, a free shuttle bus is provided every hour. Plenty of food options with several restaurants, and the best breakfast buffet I have every come across"

Lovely hotel. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Despite being fully booked the hotel was quiet, the pool area uncrowded with plenty of different places to sit and relax.

Good clean hotel with good selection of amenities

The Residence is part of Vila Porto Mare which has magnificent gardens as well as five restaurants and five pools. It is like staying in the garden of Eden and deserves far more than four stars

Managed to get a very reasonably priced apartment in The Residence as part of the Porto da Mar group. Wonder full stay and food and facilities really spoilt us. Thanks to the staff.

We stayed at the Residence for a week with our 14 month old daughter in a one-bedroom apartment. The staff were all very friendly and willing to help and the hotel was amazing. The apartment was big, with a large bathroom split into two (one with a bath and sink, the other with a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. The living/dining room was also a fair size & kitchen was stocked with everything you would need for basic cooking. The bedroom was plenty big enough for the three of us, with two double beds pushed together forming one HUGE bed, plenty of drawer and hanging space and a large mirror/dressing area. The balcony was great, lovely view over the resort and sea (I'd recommend asking for a full sea view room when you book - higher levels are nice too). One of the best things for us was the black out curtains, especially with a toddler for naps! It was lovely and dark at any time of the day with them pulled. The AC worked great and was easy to control, the housekeeping staff were very pleasant and did a great job. They even washed up the few bits that we'd left by the sink, including our daughters bibs, cups etc. If you are travelling with little ones or a baby, there is an indoor play area with toys/ride-ons which was great. The pools were all lovey and clean, & indoor ones warm enough for baby. Breakfast was good, got a bit samey but plenty of choice. Free shuttle into Funchal is useful & lots of restaurants nearby. Large free car parking area if you rent a car too.

A large complex with great facilities - good pool areas and a surplus of sun loungers which is missing at many hotels. It took some time familiarising to the hotel complex layout as this complex shares restaurants and facilities with two other adjacent hotels. The map wasnt that helpful to navigate internally in the hotel but a minor point - overall the hotel was great,

We spent 9 days at this beautiful hotel in September and had a great time. The rooms are spotless and very large (if a little dated) and the facilities are second to none. Location is ideal - not in the centre of town but close enough to walk in ten minutes, Lots of restaurants and some shops nearby. The only negative is that we'd actually booked into The Residence for our stay, looking forward to a kitchenette and access to the resort's well reviewed restaurants and gardens. Two days before we were due to fly, I received an email saying our reservation (fully confirmed, paid for and 'guaranteed') was no longer available as the hotel was overbooked. We had no choice but to accept to offer of the alternative hotel as it was such short notice. Overall, if we'd booked the Cliff Bay to start with, I'd give it five stars, but the uncertainty of being moved at such short notice plus the bar and food at the Cliff Bay being that much more expensive, it gets a lower score. We also ended up with a 'garden/mountain view' room which basically looked out over the entrance to the hotel and the road. In terms of food, the breakfast was fantastic, bar food ok, buffet overpriced and disappointing

We had a great stay, our apartment was faultless, as were the grounds and facilities. Only problem we had was navigating our way around the complex, it's very confusing and signage could be better. Amazing breakfast.

We stayed at the Residence and we absolutely liked it. Nothing to complain about really. The room was massive, with everything that's needed to cook. The staff at the reception was super helpful and nice. Their command of English (and other languages such as French or German) is truly impressive. If you are still hesitating to go there, we can only recommend to go for it. You won't be disappointed.

The cleanliness and well maintained facilities are hard to fault. Good breakfast on a pleasant, shady terrace. Useful courtesy coach to Funchal, but you need to book it in advance at reception. The free wi if in the room worked fine for email etc. Well equipped kitchenette and roomy balcony with table and chairs (for 2). BBC News as well as Sky News. Effective air con. The staff clearly take pride in keeping things up to a high standard and are professional and courteous.

THe residence is a family hotel .THe staff are very helpful The music from the hotel next door and other surrounding areas was not good although it did stop at 11pm My overall experience of this hotel was good would I go back sorry it has to be a no due to the sound of the music

Great holiday and location, staff very helpful and the food was superb. It was our first time there but we have already booked to return next year.

The top line on this hotel is that it is excellent. The staff are great, the value his good. the facilities; décor and rooms are very good. Can’t really find any fault at all!

Great location a short bus ride from Funchal town. Glorious views and tropical gardens. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Pools were lovely and there were lots of facilities and not too many people! Our room was super comfy with a terrace - we will return!

Beautiful hotel in admittedly a very tourist/hotel area with all the amenities you could want e.g pools,bars, restaraunts. Best buffet breakfast with great choice including prosecco. Beautifully appointed gardens also.

Overall very nice hotel. The pool, gardens and grounds were awesome. The only small complaint I have is the air conditioning unit was directly below our balcony. It could be bit loud when running which was most of the time.

Perfect location and hotel. The room facilities could not have been better. The staff were helpful and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The room was perfect ultra clean and modern with every facility you could need. Located near the lido and a quiet rocky bay. Facilities were good and there were plenty of opportunities to walk locally or just relax in the grounds, pools or park. Transport links to and from the hotel are good and local taxis relatively cheap. There are numerous restaurants in the hotel complex with great food and choice. Equally there are many local restaurants and cafe bars which are convenient and good. Highly recommended we would definitely use again

Stayed for the first week in April. Self-catering, but booking through Expedia gave us breakfast too (which was excellent). Great pool too. There's a free shuttle bus into town that runs about 8 times a day (book at reception) and the airport bus stops right outside complex at Porto Mare. Will definitely be back.

We stopped for a long weekend and we were not disappointed We arrived early but they got us in to our room within the hour Beautiful location and very well appointed accommodation Will definitely return

From the moment we arrived we felt totally at home, the welcoming was friendly and the rooms felt even more palatial than we remembered. The few days were tranquil and the hot stone treatment with Monica was a real indulgent and relaxing treat to the body and soul. It was a gourmet delight visiting some iconic restaurants over the 5 nights...Madeira has worked its charm and we will not leave it 10 years again before we revisit.

Great room, great view, great facilities and great food. Really recommend this place, beautiful to look at !

The hotel exceeded our expectations. Staff were friendly and helpful, great room overlooking lush gardens, excellent pools and restaurants on site. We had planned to visit local restaurants but found those at the hotel so good we didn't eat out. The best was The Med, but the others were good too. The hotel is not fully accessible for those fully dependant on wheelchairs in that the pool we used, the indoor/outdoor, was difficult to get in and out of and doors to the garden were heavy to open. Bars, lounges and restaurants are fully accessible and there were plenty of lifts. We did not have an accessible room so I can't comment on that. We had a great time here and would happily stay in this hotel again.

This is an excellent hotel. Facilities, staff, location etc first class. I would highly recommend.

The hotel was wonderful. I am not really sure why it isn't five stars, it felt like it. They had thought of everything, a perfect spot for a relaxing time- don't expect to get much done!

The level of service, courtesy and kindness demonstrated by the staff was the best I have ever experienced anywhere! The facilities were lovely, very clean, and spacious. Food in all four restaurants was excellent (especially the Med) with great variety and quality. And we loved the breakfasts! I would return in a heartbeat.

Biggest gripe was dreadful quality of the towels - I have fluffier tea towels at home! All towels were thin and flat, very poor condition. Also unimpressed that having paid so much for the room that we had to pay extra to use the safe

Hotel and gardens were immaculate. Staff friendly.Reception staff so helpful. Central Funchal easy to reach. Walk way to Camera de Lobos really important and could well be copied by other resorts.Weather of course but not leaving areas bone dry. .

Staying at the Residence was the best thing after 24 days touring mainland Portugal We slowed down our pace as much as we wanted. The garden area was beautifully kept and a pleasure to walk in. The hotel has indoor and outdoor swimming pools that are large we also had the use of a spa and a choice of another three different pools from the two large connecting hotels beside us. The breakfast offerings were plentiful and delicious.We would highly recommend this hotel to others. In June the hotel was relatively quiet which is pleasant to us. Restaurants attached to the hotel and in Porto Mare were of a high standard.

We received a warm welcome on arrival and over the entire duration of our stay all the staff we met were always pleasant, smiling, helpful and polite. Our room was very well equipped, well furnished and comfortable. The entire hotel was spotless - as were the streets around. The transportation to / from the airport arranged with Expedia was flawless. This was our third visit to Madeira, and is unusual for us to keep returning to the same destination, and each time we have stayed at this hotel. This probably speaks volumes what we think of the hotel and destination!

Excellent hotel and top notch facilities. I loved the buffet breakfast and the nightly entertainment. We went dancing every night which was brilliant. The pools and garden setting were excellent and throughly enjoyed playing crazy golf!

Thoroughly enjoyed the stay at this excellent hotel. The Residence apartment was large, clean and had everything needed. Annoying to be asked to pay 10 Euros for use of the safe in the room though, this is 2016! last time I was asked for this was in the 1990's.Location is a bit out of town (40 minutes walk along a busy road) but plenty of regular buses and 'hop on / hop off' tourist buses if you don't want to hire a car.

This is a wonderful place. Perfect for a family holiday: Plenty to do for the kids and very relaxing for all. Staff is very friendly and deserve special mention.

Das Hotel ist sehr zentral gelegen, ein bisschen ausserhalb von Funchal. Mit dem Bus ist man aber innert 15 min. im Stadtzentrum, Altstadt. Wir haben nie im Hotel selber gegessen, aber innert 5 min. zu Fuss hat es sehr gute Lokale, wo man Essen gehen kann. Das Frühstücksbuffet lässt keine Wünsche offen. Die Poolanlage ist sehr grosszügig und der Meerwasserpool ist auch nur fünf min. vom Hotel entfernt. Für uns der perfekte Aufenthalt.

Très bel hôtel, très propre. Chambre avec cuisine bien équipée permettant de faire des repas du soir au calme. calme. Très bon petit déj. Personnel gentil et souriant. Superbes piscines extérieures et superbes piscines intérieures. Parking, laverie, musique live, et jeux (mini golf, ping pong, salle de jeux). Rien à redire.

Urlaub eine Woche im April 2018 im Residenz Hotel. Sehr gute Infrastruktur sowohl in den drei Häusern; Residenz, PortoMar und EdenMar Hotel, als auch im Umfeld. Sehr gepflegt, sauber, Möbel und Einrichtungen in tadellosem Zustand. Wer als Stadtmensch die Geräusche von zu Hause nicht vermissen möchte, sollte ein Zimmer zur Rua de Leichlingen nehmen, wer Ruhe sucht, sollte diese Zimmer meiden. Frühstücksbuffet üppig und international. Flottes Personal. Sehr gute Küche und Service im Restaurant MED im PortoMar. Gute italienische Küche im Restaurant Il Basilico im Residenz. Wir kehren gerne zurück in diese tolle Anlage.

Dejligt hotel, der ligger i forlængelse med 2 andre hoteller. Fælles om diverse barer, restauranter og spa. Deler også stort og hyggeligt udeområde. Meget venlig og service minded personale. Forskellig typer af levende musik hver aften. Kan bestemt anbefales.

perfekter Aufenthalt für einen erholsamen Urlaub, in der Nähe gibt es zahlreiche Restaurants und Supermärkte, auch Mietwagenstationen und Bushaltestellen sind vorhanden, der SPA-Bereich ist groß, die Sauna kostet 5 Euro pro Person/1 Stunde, die Zimmer mit Blick in den Garten und auf das Meer sind hell, das Personal ist sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit

Ich war das erste Mal in Madeira und war überrascht wie sauber es überall ist. BRAVO ! Da ich gehbehindert bin und mit dem Rollator unterwegs, war der Aufenthalt ohne Probleme und überall gab es hilfsbereite Menschen .Danke !

Hyvä ja runsas aamupala, hotellista netissä olevat kuvat vastasivat todellisuutta. Wifi pelasi hyvin. Hotellin baareissa oli iltaisin elävää musiikkia. Suojainen ja suuri allasalue, monia altaita, kauniit istutukset. Tilauksesta ilmainen kuljetus keskustaan.

Prachtig hotel, ruime kamers, grote mooie tuin. Ontbijtbuffet was uitstekend

Pool was big enough, nice view, very clean rooms (and I have high standards regarding that), a huuuuuge bed for two (biggest one I´ve ever slept in), nice staff. Everything went smoothly. Our room was facing the street, there was music - but the music was nice, so we didn´t care ;-) Definitely worth the money.
