This is a simple but tidy and welcoming hotel great for anyone wanting to experience a bit of traditional Kyoto. Its traditional roots give it real charm, but this should not be mistaken for luxury. Accommodations are modest but welcoming. Great for those interested in Kyoto's history but on a budget and looking for a unique experience.

Relaxing and Comfortable Stay
Kyoto Machiya SHOUAN is a clean and well-kept secret charm in Kyoto, nestled in a quiet neighborhood and yet not too far away from public transportation. It is a small four-room ryokan which is extremely clean and quiet. Even though you have to share bathroom and restrooms, there is never a line and the facilities are very clean. It has a nice bath which you will enjoy the soak.

Sweet lovely historical building
Good place. It is very old and made in traditional ways, so they're getting used to hotels.com booking in a cash based world. But super friendly and close to a supermarket for food. If you hate street noise bring ear plugs and you'll be fine. These are tatami rooms with paper doors. The wifi was the best. Most of Japan makes you sign in, these guys have it like you would at home. Everyone was super sweet there and for the price you really can't beat it in kyoto which was surprisingly expensive to book last minute.

The location is not convenient, and they never serve meals like I expected, i was expecting it to be like a ryokan thats why i booked it and checked out early from gion weekly apartment, me and my friend was so dissatisfied, after realizing is not a ryokan. We'll its lessons learned...

Nice Japanese experience
Hotel itself was nice. We arrived around 9pm and the owner was just about to lock the door. Thankfully we got there in time. We stayed upstairs and were taught how to make beds. Good experience but could be tiring if it's towards the end of a long day. Had to go downstairs for shower and toilet. but the deco is nice. Close to nijo castle, but otherwise far from everything else, but the bus line can take us to places. Nice to live far away from commercial district, but hope the location is more convenient.

Great place to stay, was good to have some peace and quiet. Very friendly and helpful staff. Was also nice to experience the traditional side to Japan which you don't get in the large hotels.

A true traditional Japanese hotel
If you are looking for the comfort of an American hotel, this place is far from it but if you want to experience the traditional japanesse hotel this is THE place! Rooms are small but the mats are comfortable with A/C in rooms although the bathrooms are in a common area there are 3 speedster toliets, and the bath/ shower can be used as a traditional onsen!! Staff extremely friendly and speaks great English. They also have map with local restraints marked! I would make sure not to get the front bottom room but for us the noise didn't bother us - since we live in the city. They also provided hair dryer/ toothbrush ect. One thing to note rooms are locked with small padlock, but we were never concern with safety.

Basic ryokan
No visible sign to indicate the Inn apart from a tiny brass plate beside the door. Very small doors for a 6ft4 person who kept bumping his head on them. About 1.5kms from Nijo JR Station so if you have lots of luggage suggest a taxi for ¥610. There are better ryokans around.

Little Kyoto gem
This place was fantastic. The room was very comfortable and the staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. They even gave us tips on what to see and how to get there.

Cute little place to stay, nice and traditional.
Lovely little Ryoken, and nicer than those more central in town. A little difficult to find without taxi, so needs bigger sign and perhaps some directional sign on the main road nearby. Very clean, lovely bath and very welcoming and friendly staff.
The downstairs room is smaller now and doesn't lead onto the garden anymore..but we felt like we had stepped back in time into a calm and Japanese world. The only thing I would suggest is that they put a microwave next to the sink, or by the fridge in rooms. If it is late, or inconvenient it would be great to just be able to make a quick meal. There was also a couple who rang the doorbell for 10 minutes at 6am and woke us up in the morning. Very inconsiderate and thoughtless of them! However this was not the fault of Shouan, however I think guests should be asked not to turn up to the hotel until reception opens at least 8am. :) Thanks for a lovely stay.

Wonderful Ryokan experience in Kyoto
We were lucky to spend two nights here and it was our first experience in a Ryokan. The lovely young lady explained to us how to set up the room at night - converting the cosy seating room into a comfortable place to sleep with the futons. The bathroom was lovely, and while we didn't utilise the bath (there were too many other things to do in Kyoto) it looked gorgeous. A really peaceful location and setting.

Beautiful ryokan
I wish I had stayed here longer! A very comfortable, clean, and quiet traditional ryokan. Minimalism done well. I definitely recommend staying here during a trip to Kyoto.

Wonderful traditional Ryokan style accommodation!
This gem blew us away!!! A beautifully restored >100 year old traditional Machiya accommodation at a stone's throw from Nijo castle. The 1st floor room with garden view is unbeatable in terms of privacy / traditional Japanese Ryokan feel. Traditional Japanese futon bedding was surprisingly comfortable and warm (and great fun). The bathroom (shared, but with only 4 rooms in the hotel it is available virtually all the time) is a modern, comfortable sauna experience that we enjoyed maybe even more than the rest of Kyoto :-)
Worth every penny, and more!
Perfect for a couple or friends traveling together. Easy access with bus or subway from Kyoto station. Friendly staff and nice accommodation. Quiet surroundings, but many options for grocery shopping and eating nearby. Very happy about the stay!
