Nice little cosy place to stay
The Royal Oak was clean and tidy , everything you would expect for a pub. The room was a nice size and was comfortable enough. The staff were really helpful and very pleasant. The Royal Oak is quite central so you can easily walk to everywhere in the small village. The breakfast was traditional English breakfast and was of standard fare. It was very cheap to stay for the night and would recommend if passing through Chapel area.

Good value but en-suite very small (room 6) and door lock almost impossible to lock or unlock a serious issue especially in the event of a fire

New years Break
Nice little hotel with friendly staff.
The room we had was comfortable Although the shower was a little small it worked well.We had an evening meal which was very nice.
Hotel is situated in a good spot and we did a nice easy walk (about 5/6 miles)taking in a couple of pubs and some beautiful scenery . New year's eve there was music and fireworks at midnight which were very good.

Try to give the independent little man a chance
Well after being up and about for 15 hrs I needed a good meal, so I checked in and went straight to the bar for some food. Great selection of food which I had starter and main course. Fantastic food.
Then up to my room with my bags. Obviously grabbed the complimentary shower gels and time to get wet, only to find both shower gels 1/2 empty like they’d been left from previous people. Still had enough in my bag to fulfil the job.
Next it was coffee time, ah ! No spoons, how can this be missed ? So improvised and cleaned a sachet under the tap and used that.
The next day, so on commencement of starting my morning ablutions I found I had been left a small amount of toilet paper. 20 sheets to be precise, so military skills came into play to preserve some for later.
How can these 3 basic things be missed ?
On the plus side the bed was comfortable and the radiators hot.

Dirtiest hotel ever.
The worst room ever. It seemed like the room was never cleaned from months. Dust, Hair and stains were all over the place. The bedsheets were dirty. The towels were not clean. This place shouldn't have any guests at all.

Great choice for a weekend away. Check their webpa
The hotel is very well looked after from the outside. As you come in, the staff is mainly based at the pub, which it was not a problem whatsoever.
The pub was very friendly, warm and welcoming. The staff was really nice. Prices were really affordable in compare to our expectations and really taste and fresh food. They kindly committed to our needs!
Bedroom was rather big, spacious and gently decorated. We missed a hair drier (although in all fairness we did not ask). It was general heating and it was a bit chilly although they attempted to increase the temperature and offered us to sit by the fire in the pub or suggested for a spare heater, that we would have appreciated, but we did not return to ask for it. As we woke up the window seal was wet from humidity despite the arms thick of the old walls.
It was aloud music on from the pub although it did not disturb our sleep at all.
Free parking on the back.

This is one to avoid
We chose this hotel as it was conveniently located in the town and close to Kinder Scout for walking. Unfortunately the hotel is a disaster waiting to happen with many health and safety issues, even aside from the quality of the rooms, bedding and other facilities. Fire doors are constantly wedged open, even up to the second floor. The room I stayed in had a faulty lock which meant once locked it was almost impossible to open - needless to say I slept with the door unlocked - far from ideal. The manager came to investigate but just shrugged when I explained the risk. The rooms themselves are outdated in terms of decor and furniture, and the beds and bedding are totally worn out - probably the worst hotel bed I’ve ever slept in. Whilst the hotel staff were friendly enough they seemed oblivious to any of the issues, and more concerned about selling us beer and breakfasts. Even allowing for the relatively low cost of the room, this is not good value for money and I would definitely not recommend staying here - it needs some serious investment to make it safe, and more pleasant to stay in.

The good and the bad.
Lovely looking hotel from outside. My room was small and compact but looked ok. Had TV mounted on wall, kettle, coffee, teabags, milk pots all supplied. Towels, bed lined supplied. Bed linen nice and fresh.
Evening meal was superb and reasonably priced.
Good service at check on and for meal.
Faults which really spoilt my overnight stay.!!
NO HOT WATER FROM SHOWER no matter which direction you turned the dial. Left it running for 10minutes at both ends of the temperature dial 😡😡😡
Went to hand basin as needed a wash following training on my bike! NO HOT WATER FROM EITHER TAP despite leaving them on one at a time for nearly 10 minutes. Water pressure from taps very poor with one tap the water barely come out of tap.
When toilet was flushed the water continued to come into the toilet - you could hear this all through the night = very annoying!
Because i had spent over an hour in the ensuite room the extractor fan continued working for 2.5 to 3 hours after i turned out the light = very annoying when you want to get to sleep as i had to get up early to go to my time trial race.
Also the light over the shower area does not work.
Lastly - the double bed have lovely bed linen, but the pillow end of the bed was lower than feet end of bed - trying to sleep like this gives you a headache as blood is pooling as it is below your heart when lying down! All this is a problem because of an uneven floor!!
