Learn more about Bologna

Beneath medieval towers that lean like tipsy professors, Bologna's terracotta skyline glows amber at sunset. The Piazza Maggiore buzzes with students from the world's oldest university, debating philosophy over plates of perfect tortellini. Climb the precarious wooden stairs of Torre Asinelli for views that explain why they call this 'La Rossa.' The city unfolds beneath 40 kilometres of porticoes – now UNESCO-listed – where locals have strolled protected from rain since the Middle Ages. In the Quadrilatero market, vendors offer mortadella with the reverence others reserve for fine art. Don't miss the unfinished façade of San Petronio Basilica or Neptune's fountain, where the sea god's proportions were strategically reduced to avoid offending papal sensibilities.

To fully appreciate the city's landmarks, historical sites, and cultural treasures—including museums, monuments, cafes, the university, the cathedral, dining options, shopping venues, churches and the library—a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is recommended. This affordable period offers great value for money, making it an excellent choice for those travelling on a budget.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Hotels.com offers travellers the chance to explore discounted rates for hotels in Bologna through its DealsOpens in a new window section, where you may discover attractive offers. For those planning a last-minute escape, the Last-Minute Deals section could provide options close to your travel date. Additionally, the Smart Shopping tool available via the app empowers you to compare hotel prices and amenities, increasing the likelihood of spotting favourable opportunities. You may also enable alerts to stay informed on flash sales and special promotions.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and the time of year, so being flexible with your dates could help you save on your stay in a hotel in Bologna. For those seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels might offer a more personalised touch and sometimes even better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average. If it appears to be on the higher side, we might suggest more affordable dates to help you potentially find a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels situated near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive; however, with Bologna's superb public transport connections, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel a bit further out that remains well connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even some lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money to be found. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
