Top neighbourhoods in Cusco

San Blas

San Blas charms visitors with its steep cobblestone streets and artisan workshops spilling onto pavements. The neighborhood's colonial architecture frames the iconic San Blas Church, while hidden plazas reveal Indigenous vendors selling traditional crafts. Artists hammer silver and weave textiles in open studios where you can watch authentic Peruvian handicrafts come to life. Intimate restaurants serve fusion Andean cuisine in converted colonial mansions with courtyards and original stone walls. Getting around requires sturdy shoes—most visitors walk uphill from Plaza de Armas in about 15 minutes. The steep terrain creates dramatic views over red-tiled roofs towards distant Andean peaks.

Cusco Historic Center

Cusco Historic Centre feels like a living time capsule where ancient Incan walls meet Spanish colonial balconies on winding cobblestone streets. The imposing Cathedral and Qorikancha temple foundations tell stories spanning centuries, while artisan workshops in San Blas invite you to watch masters at work. Colourful textiles and exotic fruits create a feast for the senses at buzzing San Pedro Market. Traditional restaurants serve everything from simple quinoa soup to fancy alpaca steaks between exploring the neighborhood's museums and churches. Hotels range from cosy hostels to luxurious suites in converted colonial buildings featuring original Incan stonework. Walking is the best way to explore these narrow streets, though the high altitude might leave you catching your breath.

San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal area delivers Cusco's greatest hits with a side of breathing room. Iconic Cristo Blanco statue stands watch over cobblestone streets where ancient Incan walls peek through colonial architecture. Art lovers can explore the Pre-Columbian Art Museum while history buffs wander Plaza de las Nazarenas. The hillside location rewards your climb with spectacular panoramic views of Cusco's terracotta rooftops. Family-run restaurants serve authentic Peruvian dishes at prices that won't break your budget. Getting around requires sturdy shoes and a willingness to tackle steep terrain. Taxis can navigate the narrow streets when your legs need a break.

Santiago

The Santiago neighbourhood offers attractions, such as Santiago Plaza and "El Molino I" Shopping Center.

"Great staff and location, right across the local market and extremely convenient to everything. The room was clean and a decent size. Breakfast was better than other hotels we stayed at in Peru, but don’t expect a luxury spread. The hot water was a little iffy, but please realize these older buildings in downtown Peru are not modern. Amazing rooftop patio overlooking the city. Overall an enjoyable stay and would comeback again."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Cusco

  1. Book for the cheapest times: The most economical period to visit Cusco is from January to March, when hotel rates are lower. It is recommended to spend at least 3 to 4 days in this historic city to discover its renowned landmarks, cathedrals, ruins, museums, historical tours, churches, shopping areas, and cultural attractions, including cafes and UNESCO sites. This visit offers great value for money and is particularly appealing for those travelling on a budget, where affordable experiences and budget-friendly options may drop prices even further.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: For budget-conscious travellers eager to visit Cusco, Hotels.com offers DealsOpens in a new window that may uncover attractive hotel discounts. If you're seeking a spontaneous escape, the Last-Minute Deals section could reveal special offers near your travel date. Moreover, you’re more likely to see competitive options when you utilise the Smart Shopping tool via the app, which allows you to compare hotel prices and amenities. You may receive alerts on price drops or available rooms, ensuring you stay updated on potential savings for your last-minute getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may differ depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year, so being flexible with your dates could help you save on your stay in a Cusco hotel. For those seeking a distinctive experience, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised service and potentially offer better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average; if it is on the higher side, we might suggest more affordable dates, which may help you find a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually command higher prices, yet thanks to Cusco's excellent public transport links, you might discover a more affordable independent hotel further afield that remains well connected. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
