Top neighbourhoods in Ipoh

Taman Jubilee

Taman Jubilee offers an authentic slice of Malaysian suburban life away from Ipoh's tourist buzz. The quiet residential streets lined with terraced houses provide a peaceful escape where you can watch local families go about their daily routines. Area kopitiams and mamak stalls serve up delicious, wallet-friendly Malaysian dishes that won't break the bank. Budget-conscious travellers will appreciate the homestays and guesthouses that cost less than city centre accommodation. Getting around requires some planning—grab cars are readily available, but public buses run infrequently. The neighborhood's calm atmosphere makes evening strolls pleasant, though most shops close early.

Jawa

Jawa offers a slice of authentic Javanese life tucked away in Ipoh's quieter corners. Stroll through narrow residential lanes where daily life unfolds naturally—children play in streets while aromas of lemongrass and coconut milk fill the air. Traditional warungs serve up delicious gudeg and soto ayam for curious food adventurers. Small family-run shops sell colourful spices and sambal varieties at prices well below city averages. The area quiets down by 9pm, with minimal tourist infrastructure but maximum cultural immersion. Getting around requires ride-sharing services or walking the uncrowded streets where locals offer polite nods to respectful visitors.

Taman Canning

Taman Canning gives you a slice of real Malaysian suburban life without the touristy buzz. The area hums with local kopitiam coffee shops and mamak stalls where you can feast on authentic Malaysian dishes for pocket-friendly prices. Kids play in small area parks while neighbors chat across front gardens of colourful terrace houses. Perak Stadium sits nearby for sports fans. Getting around is easiest with Grab ride-sharing since public buses run infrequently. Budget guesthouses and family-run homestays offer accommodation at half the price of central Ipoh spots. The quiet streets make for peaceful evening strolls, though don't expect nightlife—this place winds down after sunset.

Ulu Kinta

Ulu Kinta offers a genuine slice of Malaysian suburban living, far from tourist crowds. The neighborhood's multicultural fabric shines through its diverse temples and family-oriented atmosphere. Nature lovers will appreciate the lush tropical surroundings, with limestone caves and therapeutic hot springs just a short drive away. Kinta City Shopping Centre and the local night market provide glimpses into everyday Malaysian life. Small family-run kopitiams serve authentic Malaysian breakfast fare while budget-friendly homestays offer cultural insights from friendly local hosts. Getting around requires planning as public transport is limited, but the area's peaceful streets make for pleasant morning walks among frangipani and bougainvillea blooms.

Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh

Experience authentic Malaysian life in Bandar Baru Medan Ipoh, a peaceful residential township outside Ipoh's bustling centre. Wander through local markets where the aromas of nasi lemak and char kway teow fill the air. Kids play in small area parks while locals go about their daily routines, creating a genuine suburban atmosphere far from tourist crowds. Affordable guesthouses and family-run lodgings offer a homely base, with prices significantly lower than central Ipoh. Local kopitiams and mamak stalls serve delicious meals for just a few ringgit. While public transport is limited, Grab rides are readily available to take you to central attractions like Perak Stadium.

WEIL Hotel

WEIL Hotel

8/10 Good
"The hotel is location is great. I stayed 4 nights in the Superior King Room on th 12th floor, it was spacious and clean, bed was good but pillows can be better. However the toilet paper is very hard and rough, I have expected better for this kind of hotel. Last day the housekeeper forgot to give bathtowels, I called the receptionist and requested for new ones, but she seems not believing me and want to check first. I found it very strange, why would I lie about it. She did sent someone, then the housekeeper wants to check again in my room. Then I feel offended, not sure why they want to keep checking and searching for something there is not there. That's waste of my time. Most of the staff are friendly and nice, but there was a staff who quite has a big mouth, stopping me to appraise the piano on the first level, well there were no sign that guests are not supposed to play on it, I apologised for playing it. but he seems very upset and kept saying that is not meant for play and only decoration. That's very rude of him, if you don't want people to touch it then don't put the piano there. As a world traveller pianos are put in airports, train stations, malls etc for piano users. These last two points kinda ruin my mood during the stay, very unfortunate."

1969 DKelly Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"We love the hotel’s Art Deco/contemporary luxury design, making it a truly unique and beautiful property. A lot of thought goes into every aspect from the impressive reception lobby to the luxurious bed linen. The welcome tea hosted on the Executive Floor lounge is a nice and hospitable gesture (well done)! Don’t miss going up to the rooftop garden. The views are amazing! The staff are helpful and friendly. Special mention of the Concierge Mr Amin who has a cheerful smile for everyone. The buffet breakfast is one of the best we have had. We will definitely choose to stay at the D’Kelly again when we next visit Ipoh. We wish the 1969 D’Kelly brand will carry across other Malaysian cities. Book it, you will not regret it."

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Ipoh

  1. Book for the cheapest times: Ipoh is an affordable destination that offers great value for money, particularly for visitors on a budget. The most economical periods to visit are March, October, and November, when hotel prices may drop to lower prices. For those eager to explore the city’s renowned landmarks, rich history, and cultural attractions — including charming coffee spots, serene temples, and intriguing cave explorations — a stay of at least 2 to 3 days is ideal. This timeframe allows travellers to fully immerse themselves in the cultural richness and historical allure that Ipoh has to offer.
  2. Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: If you're seeking exclusive Ipoh hotel deals, start by exploring the DealsOpens in a new window section on Hotels.com. You may discover last-minute offers by visiting the Last-Minute Deals area, where discounted rates on hotels close to your travel date could be available. Additionally, activating email alerts or push notifications will keep you informed about flash sales and special promotions. With the Smart Shopping comparison tool available via the app, you're more likely to see a range of hotel prices and amenities, helping you make an informed decision for your last-minute getaway.
  3. Be flexible with dates: Prices may vary depending on factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and time of year. Being flexible with your dates might help you save on your stay in an Ipoh hotel. For those seeking distinctive experiences, boutique hotels can provide a more personalised touch and potentially better value. When you book with Hotels.com, we will inform you if the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average, and if it is on the higher side, we may suggest alternative dates that could offer a better deal.
  4. Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually tend to be more expensive, yet thanks to Ipoh's superb public transport links, you might discover an independent hotel further afield that is more likely to be affordable while remaining well connected. For those keen to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
