My husband and I made a night's stop in Atami during our recent two-week Japan trip and stayed at Pearl Star. The price of around $700 a night (in early November) was way beyond our usual budget but we figured it was worth it because, above all, we were attracted to the hotel rooms' private onsens and the hotel seemed like it was quite luxury.
The positives:
-The hotel is very nicely located right on the beach and a close walk to both the train station area and the town's ginza street
-It's extremely clean and well-appointed - the included breakfast wasn't the best we had in Japan was certainly nice and extensive, and we enjoyed the fairly affordable 30-min massages available at the spa
The big negative, for us, was the lack of personalized service of any kind we received from the hotel staff, particularly the front desk. When we arrived, we asked if there was a concierge and the man helping us told us this was a word he'd never heard before; we asked if anyone could recommend local restaurants or help make reservations (particularly needed as this is not a super touristy location and not a lot of English speakers) and were told they could not. We were not offered any general information about how our in-room onsen worked, or how the public onsen worked/rules for it either.
Overall, for this price especially, I would expect a much higher level of service from this hotel.
