Before you read my review, understand a few things about this hotel:
1. It is a low-budget hotel intended for travellers who simply want a comfortable place to sleep.
2. This is a dorm, not a traditional hotel. Bathrooms are shared.
3. This is a historic Amsterdam building. The dimensions of corridors, stairwells, & rooms will not comply with modern standards.
With that said, on to the review. I simply wanted a cheap but clean place to sleep for one night: I was not going to spend much time inside the room, and I just wanted a good night's rest. Hotel Continental matched all my requirements: it was literally the cheapest place to stay in Amsterdam with private rooms (as opposed to a hostel).
The reception was very friendly and checked me in 30 minutes before the posted 2pm check-in time. I had to climb some very steep, narrow stairs to reach my room, but it's not as bad as people think. The room was clean & modern (appeared to be recently renovated), and it came with a sink, desk, & comfortable twin bed! The carpet and walls in the corridors were worn, but those spaces were clean. The shared bathroom is very tiny, but it was newly renovated with new fixtures & tiles! I slept like a log: my room was quiet and comfortable with a large window for ventilation. Wifi was great, with 100+ Mbps download!
Overall, it's a great budget hotel. They've recently renovated the rooms & bathrooms so many of the reviews are outdated. Have reasonable expectations and you'll love this place!
