An interesting museum, NOT recommended as a hotel.
Not sure how the authorities let this property operate. It is literally crumbling to dust (as was the intent in the Trust of the historic owner). Plumbing is ancient (instructions to run the hot water for 15 minutes if you actually want hot water), carpet may be original, stucco is crumbling inside and out, no staff on premises after 8 pm. The bed WAS clean; the shower, due to crumbling tile---not so much. The positives are the historic interest, the "Opera" House and the artistic talent of the eccentric owner Marta Becket (who painted all of the murals on the property). The closest restaurant or food market is 7 miles away. All this should qualify the property as a museum, not a hotel. If my wife was with me, I'd be divorced.

Ghostly Amaragos Opera House
Room itself is spartan and worn. King bed comfy. But, the whole opera house thing is very interesting. Charming murals and artifacts in common area. No sign out front so it looks closed. Must look for hotel entrance well back from the road. Nearest restaurant 7 miles north. Food okay there. There are claims that the hotel is haunted. Not our experience.

This is a really terrible property. Granted it's an old building in remote area but I have stayed in hotels third world countries in remote areas with better facilities. Rooms are dilapidated. Towels are threadbare. There's a terrible odor in the lobby and rooms. We couldn't get out of here fast enough.

Wanting to see stars? This is the place you want to be. Eating is 7 miles up the road. Great tea and coffee ready 7 a.m. It's an old motel with lots of character.

Really great opportunity to stay in a historic building and to learn about a beautiful life. As they state plainly on their website, staying here is a rustic experience--there are exposed pipes, no TV (although there is wifi), and parts of the hotel have a funny smell. But it is a 100+ year old building that has endured many punishing desert summers and cold winters. It is not the Ritz-Carlton--don't come here if that's what you're after. However, my fiancee and I felt enriched learning the story of Marta Beckett and having a tour of the old opera house. Her life is inspiring, as described in the 2000 movie "Amargosa". We intend to return and we would recommend the hotel to anyone adventurous enough to sacrifice a little on amenities in order to have a truly unique experience.

Historisches sehr altes Gebäude. Zimer sind klein aber praktisch und bieten alles was man braucht. Dafür gibt es einen grossen Aufenthaltsraum, Tee und Eis. Direkt beim Hotel ist ausser einer Tankstelle absolut nichts. Es ähnelt einer Geisterstadt. Es gibt aber eine kurze Autofahrt weiter ein Restaurant. Als Ausgangspunkt fürs Death Valley hat es eine super Lage. Sehr freundliches Personal und viel historischer Charm. Mal was ganz anderes, sehr coole Location.

We absolutely loved our stay here, but we came for the experience, not the amenities. If you're looking for modern posh, this isn’t the place for you. If you are wanting a unique experience and the opportunity to spend the night in a historical location, then this is your bag! The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. We paid the small fee for the evening tour and it was wonderful! There are no TVs in the rooms and everything about the place is really, really old which was all part of the experience. We would definitely stay here again!

Tia should not be open. It discredits Expedia’s mission ramschackled in disrepair water problems no hot water no food or nearby restaurants maid service housekeeping terrible. Spent over$100 a night booked for 2 nights left after one. Would not refund 2nd night.

We checked out the room and found that there appeared to Be mold in the shower the whole place smells musty there was paint pealing everywhere and am sure that do to the age of the place it had to be lead paint which is a hazard. We did not stay for fear of health concerns

I have never slept in a dirtier place than this! And the smell is just horrible! Cracked tiles in the bathroom and the toilet wasn't even working! Very ,very bad experience! Not sure how Expedia and other travel agencies work with it because the place is falling apart. Needs some deep cleaning and a fresh paint!

Great concept. Just not quite there yet. Room was clean but had issues. Would do again to support the property- hope remodel continues. Would be a great place to stay if it can be brought up to the basic standards you expect in a 2 or 3 star hotel

Historical but may be better as a replica
We stayed here about 15 years ago when Marta was alive and performing. It was a unique and quirky experience we still talk about. However, Marta has passed, and as a hotel, the Amargosa has had some problems including flood damage. The plumbing, as noted on many signs, is 100+ years old, but the fixtures are also old. Our shower could only give hot or cold water - not warm, because it was a split tap and no shower wand. I ended up not being able to wash my hair and ran a partial bath instead. But it was time-consuming and rather unpleasant. The bed was very comfortable and they had a new A/C unit which did a great job. The staff was friendly and the common areas had amenities like microwave and toaster so that we were able to have a late supper. Overall, I suspect it will take a lot more money to repair and keep the Amargosa going than to create a replica. If you're young and want a fun story to tell about your adventures, stay here. But if you need more safety and comfort features, this may not be your best option.
