Disappointing 2nd stay (loved the first stay)
I had stayed here before and had a great time, but I was disheartened that this stay was not as good as my previous stay in 2021 nor when I stayed at Freehand's sister property in LA. While the interior design had a lot of seating, the music in the lobby was "2010 Abacrombie and Fitch" loud and distracting from conversations from the people next to you. In the hotel, I had the bunk room compared to the single room like last time. Storing food is difficult unlike at the LA Freehand which is a more true hostel with a community kitchen than Chicago so it is eating out every night. There is no kitchen in Chicago. In the room, the roommates were good, but the A/C didn't work which I hope Freehand Chicago addressed after I left. Chicago was very warm and muggy during my week in the city and the room matched the warmth.
If you looking for a private room here for a night, this is a fine place. But if you are looking to hostel, consider your food budget and research the other businesses carefully. I would say this as a hotel, but not a hostel style stay.
