This was the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had. On arrival, I raised concerns about the dirt and overall state of my room, politely asking if I could be moved to a cleaner one. After pointing out further stains and dirt in the lift, I was told the hotel would refund me because they “didn’t want me to stay there.” As a young woman travelling alone, I found this response deeply unsettling.
The staff member I dealt with was aggressive and threatening, telling me I had to leave. I waited two days to speak to a manager, as none were available when I was at the hotel. When I finally did, I was met with dismissive and standoffish behaviour. A receptionist even called me a “Karen” and said they “know people like me,” simply because I had complained.
I also noted that a colleague of mine, who stayed at the same time and raised similar complaints, was treated entirely differently, he was apologised to, offered compensation, and even given a feedback form. When I pointed this out and said I felt I was being treated unfairly, I was told I was “playing the race card.”
I spent three days at this hotel with constant anxiety, worried about returning to my room, my belongings, and how I was being treated. As I was travelling for business, I couldn’t easily change my plans. Although I eventually received an apology, it was too late, the damage was done. I have recordings of most of these exchanges with staff and even though I remained polite the entire time I was constantly gaslit.
