This hotel is cool. It is also old. It exudes early 20th charm and it also has some 110 year old hotel problems, such as the windows and doors let every noise in, and the area around the hotel is surprisingly noisy for a little town. I'll get to the noise in a sec...
The continental breakfast was meager, at best. It was barely acceptable, tbh.
The room was cool. It was old, but clean, and had real solid brass fixtures and comfortable beds. It had a radiator but no air conditioning that i can recall -- which turns out, was ok, in Arcata, which doesn't get warm even in early August. (for reference: It dropped down to 51º overnight -- on August 11!)
The town, though, has this sorta semi-permanent "hippie homeless" population that just lives in the town square. Maybe this is very typical of a California hippie town, and I chatted with some of them and they were mostly nice, and mostly harmless, but it did make the evenings much louder than one might normally expect for a small town. We're talking "yelling at 2AM" type noisiness. My teenage kids were not fans of the members of the town square. I was fine with 'em, but it was definitely not something I've encountered quite like this.
Overall, this hotel is worth staying at if you're ok with the "weird". Recommended.
